Who We Are
Katherine Fahey is a designer, performer, and printmaker who embodies a community of musicians, artists, and writers for whom elegance and authenticity are signal virtues. Her cut paper and prints have become music posters, shadow puppets, portraits, set design and animation, including lush music videos for musicians such as Wye Oak and ellen cherry. Katherine will be performing several pieces at Shadow Camp at Artscape: Her shadow-puppet show Elizabeth Whitmore is an old-time crankie (an old-fashioned scrolling shadow puppet show in a box) based on C.M. Crompton's "Mrs. Whitmore's Song," which tells the tale of a young woman's survival in pioneer days. Pickett's Charge is a shadow puppet crankie that depicts a young girl's inner questions about war and the universe. Fahey's newest piece, New Sun, is an illuminated journey through the cyclical nature of existence, a tale told through the life of a plant.
Katie Feild is a Baltimore artist, writer, and musician, who will be heading up Shadow Camp's volunteer-recruitment efforts for Artscape and assisting in many of its workshops.
Aisha Khan is a Baltimore photographer, who will serve as the official photographer for Shadow Camp at Artscape.
Crescent Moon Karagöz Shadow Puppet Theater is a traditional, Ottoman style Turkish shadow puppet experience focused on the adventures (and misadventures) of its two main protagonists, Karagöz and Hacivat, and an amazing cast of characters that have delighted and charmed audiences for over six hundred years. Performances are presented in English by American puppeteer Cliff Long, while remaining true to the form and traditions that have been handed down through the centuries. Cliff will present three performances on Saturday July 20, at Shadow Camp at Artscape.
Pablo Machioli is a Baltimore painter who will be designing the exterior artwork for Shadow Camp at Artscape.
Matt Muirhead is a Baltimore-based painter and experimental musician. At Shadow Camp he'll be providing musical support for the Two-Hour Shadow Play workshops, using his own unique handmade intsruments.
Annie Katsura Rollins is a research practitioner working at the intersection of traditional Chinese shadow puppetry, visual ethnography and the evolution of traditional forms into our modern age. She most recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship in rural China, apprenticing with the last remaining shadow puppet practitioners in seven provinces, with a focus in traditional puppet making methods. At Shadow Camp, Annie will be presenting her new work Whispers and Murmurs, Murmurs and Whispers, which incorporates the mobility of Chinese shadow puppetry with a narrative about the global history of the shadow. This show will bike around the premises and perform in 15-minute rotations. Annie will also be presenting a short talk on the history and current state of Chinese shadow puppetry and a workshop for children in the same subject.
